Tips for Buying from Cheap Used Motorcycles for Sale Online

July 23rd, 2008 by Randy Slabey

Buying cheap used motorcycles for sale through online auctions has grown over the past few years. An amazing amount of people are choosing a motorcycle online auction to buy cheap used motorcycles for sale by private owners.  Many people who are in the market to buy cheap used motorcycles for sale are turning to the internet in search of the perfect motorcycle along with the best deal for their money.

While most of the purchases that are made at a motorcycle online auction are completed with each party walking away happy there are some that are not as successful. With the fact that there is such a large volume of transactions being completed everyday there is the small chance that you will not be as pleased as some of the others who are buying a cheap used motorcycle for sale at the online auction. 99% of the buyers can avoid these problems by following simple steps and learning how online auctions work. While there is the option of having so many different motorcycles to choose from and getting a better price than you would at a dealership there are other problems that can arise from your online purchase. We recommend you take the buying safely on EBay tutorial before placing any bids.

How Can I make a Good Purchase at a Motorcycle Online Auction?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself when using an online motorcycle auction as the way of purchasing your next used motorcycle. Below you will find a few of those tips to make your online purchase a successful one.

Read and re-read the description:  Make sure that you thoroughly read over the description and view the pictures. If you go to make a bid on the motorcycle it is best to print out both the description and the pictures in case you need them for later reference.

If you have questions as the seller: If you have any questions about the motorcycle then ask the seller before you bid. All online auctions offer a way to contact the seller. Any good seller will be more than happy to answer your questions. It is always best to get all the information now, before you are committed to buying the car.

Research the value of the motorcycle first: No one wants to overpay for any reason. Isn’t this one of the reasons you are shopping online? Do a little research and comparison shopping before you place your bid to purchase the motorcycle you have your eye on. Check to make sure that you are not over paying for the same motorcycle you can get at a cheaper price somewhere else.

Consider getting a vehicle report before you bid: Many times these motorcycle auctions online sites, such as EBay, will offer you the option to purchase an independent vehicle report. If the motorcycle auction site does not provide this service then search for one on the internet. This report will tell you if the motorcycle you are thinking of purchasing has been in any accident or if it has any other serious issues. These reports cost $20 to $30. You can also hire a licensed mechanic to inspect the cheap used motorcycles for sale you are interested in buying. The cost of an independent licensed mechanic checking out perhaps a $6,000 or $10,000 bike will cost you $100 to $150.

Read all of the small print: Make sure that you know how the motorcycle is going to be delivered to you, whether it will be insured while it is being sent to you and what the cost of delivery is. Usually delivery is excluded from the auction price and you will need to contract with a third party. EBay offers online quotes for delivery. The delivery charge for an average motorcycle shipped from California to Pennsylvania will cost you $200 to $375 depending on ground or air shipment.

What payment options does the seller offer? Make sure you have checked to see what kind of payment options the seller will accept. Never ever pay cash or check for the purchase of your new motorcycle. If there is a dispute over the motorcycle you need to have some sort of protection to get your money back. Paying by either PayPal or credit card is good but the best option is to use EBay’s escrow service. The seller does not get paid until you receive your bike and am satisfied it complies with the description (pictures) advertised by the seller.

Does the seller have good feedback? Many motorcycle auctions online sites have the option for previous buyers to leave feedback for the seller. You should always check a seller’s feedback before you make a purchase.

Double check your bid: You should always double check your bid before you submit it. Make sure that the price you are willing to pay also takes into account the cost of delivery and any other cost that you might be responsible for.

By following these simple but important tips you will be able to find the motorcycle you are searching for and be able to take advantage of great motorcycle online auction! Besides cheap used motorcycles for sale, EBay offers expensive hybrid motorcycles, chopper motorcycles and used custom motorcycles.
